A Mods close out Cornhusker Classic with some great racing

The 2015 I-80 racing season came to a close on Sunday, October 11 with the third and final day of the Cornhusker Classic and the final race of the season was one the fans will remember during the off season.

Promoter Joe Kosiski implemented a new format for A Mods for the 2015 Cornhusker where the A Mods ran separate programs for Crate and Open Motors on Friday and Saturday and came together for Sunday’s championships.

After two days of adding up the points, the inside ten rows of the 30 car – 40 lap feature would be made up by the top ten Open Motor A Mods and and the outside ten cars being the top ten Crate Motor A Mods. This left the middle ten spots to be filled by the top ten cars in the 10 lap 22 car B feature. After several cautions and a far amount of attrition, Hunter Marriott put his Crate in the middle of the front row of the feature by winning the B feature.

Things got off to a rocky start in the 40 lap feature with two cars spinning on the opening lap and bringing out the caution. Once things settled down, outside pole sitter Jordan Grabouski and fellow Crate Motor driver and second row outside starter Chris Abelson started to put on a side-by-side battle for several laps with Grabouski winning out.

With 28 laps to go, the yellow waved again as Staci Stava spun in turn two. On the restart, Hunter Marriott got a good restart and passed Abelson for second. He then moved up to challenge Grabouski and after trading several slide jobs and some great side-by-side racing took the lead for good shortly after the halfway point of the race.

Meanwhile the entire field provided some great racing including a charge from 21st to third by former NASCAR Star Ken Schrader before the final caution waved for Luke Frosh with two laps to go. On the restart, Marriott maintained his momentum and held on hold off Grabouski for the win. Schrader finished third, Abelson fourth, Justin Zeitner fifth and Jesse Sobbing from 18th to finish sixth. The victory was worth $4,000 to Marriott.

Other winners on Championship night included Kyle Berck in Bragging Rights Late Models (Berck also won the SLMR race on Saturday night), Chris Abelson in B Mods, Mike Nichols in Stock Cars, Kyle Bond in Hobby Stocks and Larry Cronin in Compacts.
