Speedy Bill Smith Memorial to honor a legend

On Friday, August 28, I-80 Speedway is playing host to the Speedy Bill Smith Memorial. If you know the least bit about cars, speed and racing you probably know about the late Speedy Bill Smith. Bill along with his lifelong partner and wife Joyce started Speedway Motors in 1952 and turned it into the world’s largest source of performance parts.

Along the way the Smith’s were big supporters of all forms of auto racing from the ownership of their famous purple number 4X race cars to sponsoring many of America’s dirt track racing series through Speedway Motors. While its the Speedy Bill Memorial its hard not to remember Joyce as well. They were lifetime partners and their partnership made Speedway Motors a household name in performance parts.

The inaugural “Speedy Bill Smith Memorial” will feature the following classes; A Mods, B Mods, Bragging Rights Late Models, Stock Car/ProAms, Hobby Stocks and the Nebraska 360 Sprint Car Series. All classes except Sprint Cars will pay $1,004 to win and $104 to start the A features. The Nebraska 360 Sprint Cars will be running for their standard purse of $8,900. ALL ENTRANTS will receive a $50 gift certificate from Speedway Motors.

Speedway Motors has been passing out free tickets to the Grandstands all year long, but if you do not have a free ticket, Grandstand Admission will be $10 for Adults, $5 for kids (6-12) with 5 and under free as always. Pit Passes will be $30 and as the event is unsanctioned there is NO license requirement. An early entry fee of $40 for all classes will be set up on the I-80 website. The entry fee day of race will be $50. The pit gates will open at 4 pm, Grandstands at 5:30 pm with racing starting at 7:15pm..
