The Silver Dollar Nationals is just ten weeks away

In another ten weeks, the best Dirt Late Models and the best Modifieds in the country will converge on I-80 Speedway for the Fourth Annual Silver Dollar Nationals. The event drew rave reviews last year as USMTS Modified Champion turned part-time Late Model driver Ryan Gustin charged from his 34th starting position to take the lead on lap 47 against the best drivers in the business.

Later, Gustin tangled with a lapped car taking himself out of contention. Mr. Consistent, Jimmy Owens took back the lead and drove to a $27,000 payday on his way to his third consecutive Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series Championship. The year’s version of the 80 lap feature pays $30,000 to win.

You can expect all the main players to return for this year’s version (July 17, 18 & 19) which is once again co-sanctioned by the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series and the Midwest Late Model Racing Association (MLRA). Currently, Don O’Neal leads the Lucas Oil points at 1,915 with team mate Steve Francis right behind at 1,865. Defending Champion Jimmy Owens once again got off to a slow start but has quietly moved into third at 1,835. Eddie Carrier, Jr., Earl Pearson, Jr. and Scott Bloomquist are right behind. Non-series regulars such as Billy Moyer, Jr., Brian Birkhofer and Jimmy Mars are also expected to be on hand.

On the USMTS Modified side of things, Rodney Sanders has also started racing Dirt Late Models and doing a great job as witnessed by his win at I-80’s Spring Meltdown in April. Sanders is still a force in the USMTS and will lead the likes of Johnny and Stormy Scott, Kelly Shryock, Zack VanderBeek and the other USMTS regulars into the SDN. One part-time USMTS driver this year is I-80 Speedway regular Dylan Smith of Osceola. Once again the USMTS will be running complete shows on both Friday and Saturday nights.
