I-80 Speedway concludes busy 2014 racing season
I-80 Speedway concluded a very busy 2014 racing season with the running of the Speedway Motors Cornhusker Classic on October 10 thru 12. The Saturday, October 11 night of the Cornhusker drew a record setting 289 race cars. Unfortunately, there was some unfinished business as the A Mod, B Mod and Hobby Stock features and two Last Chance Bashes from the final day of the Cornhusker Classic were rained out and will be made up in 2015.
Despite an extremely wet 2014 racing season, only two I-80 racing programs were lost to the weatherman, those being the Alphabet Soup Race on June 27 and All Star Sunday on August 31. Other programs effected by the weatherman were successfully made up including the Cookies Sauces and Seasoning Charlie Clark Memorial and the Bobby Parker Memorial.
The season started out with a new look at I-80 as thanks to support from NASCAR, Speedway Motors and Certified Transmission we debuted our new scoreboard.
The 2014 season included 13 completed NASCAR Whelen All American Series events, the season opening Durst Doubledown Spring Meltdown, the Bugeater Bash, the Cookies Sauces and Seasonings Charlie Clark Memorial, the return of the World of Outlaws and the Speedway Motors Cornhusker Classic.
The NASCAR Whelen All American Series weekly racing included the Cubby’s Super Late Models, Tighton Tools A Mods, the Ty’s Outddor Power & Service B Mods, LaVista Keno Grand Nationals, Rotella’s ProAms and River City Heating & Cooling Hornets.
The 2014 I-80 season was highlighted by two marquee events. The Fourth Annual Silver Dollar Nationals brought the best Dirt Late Models and the best Modifieds in the country to I-80 Speedway in July. Scott Bloomquist drove away with the $30,000 to win Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series 80 lap feature and Rodney Sanders swept the two United States Modified Touring Series features.
Then in September at the Casey’s General Stores Midwest Fall Brawl 3, Wayne Johnson cleaned out the bank when he left I-80 Speedway with over $61,000 (the most in 360 Sprint Car history) when he swept both ASCS National features and collected the $50,000 bonus posted by Durst Motorsports & Hot Rod Paintless Dent Repair for winning both features.
During the year, the Nebraska Region of the Sports Car Club of America conducted several regional RallyCross events on the back 40 at I-80 Speedway and then in early October hosted the National RallyCross Championships at I-80.
I-80 Speedway would like to thank all the racers, their crews, the fans, our track workers and especially our sponsors for helping us to complete a great 2014 racing season.
